Mississippi State’s Victoria Vivians wins Gillom Trophy

What Victoria Vivians is doing for women’s college basketball in the state of Mississippi is unparalleled, unprecedented, and undeniably awesome.
The MSU star is the centerpiece of a team that seemingly got better following last year’s national title game appearance. Today, she was awarded as such. All hail the queen and her fourth consecutive Gillom Trophy. Vivians takes home the hardware over teammates Teaira McCowan and Blair Schaefer, the other two finalists for this year’s honor.
No other player in the history of the award has won it three times, more or less four, and why would it go to anyone else during the best season of her career. “Shooting, getting in the gym is something that I wasn’t a big fan of because coming out of high school I could shoot whenever I wanted, but I wasn’t a big fan of getting in the gym. And I feel like this past summer I got in the gym and now I’m taking more quality shots and just being more precise with the ball,” said Vivians.
Mississippi State Head Women’s Basketball Coach Vic Schaefer said, “She’s already gotten everybody’s best scouting report, everybody’s best defensive player 100-something times. So I just think the value and the experience of having been in those moments over and over and over again, whether it be in a high school where I’ve seen her get 67 points with three people hanging on her, where now in college where she gets everybody’s best defensive game plan and their best defender, she’s just a very aware and a very mature basketball player.”
Vivians is just the third Bulldog is school history to eclipse 2,000 points for a career.
