Mississippi State sweeps Howell/Gillom Trophies

For the third year in a row, the top male and female college basketball players in the state of Mississippi reside at Mississippi State.

This afternoon, sophomore forward Reggie Perry and freshman forward Rickea Jackson swept the Howell and Gillom trophies going to the most outstanding college basketball players in the Magnolia State.

On the men’s side, Perry takes home the honors over Breein Tyree of Ole Miss and Ledarius Woods of Tougaloo College.

As for the women, Jackson gets the hardware over teammate Jessika Carter and Quantesha Patterson of Delta State.

Together, Perry and Jackson are more than happy to keep both awards in Starkville for at least another year. Perry said, “It means a lot to continue the legacy of course, and it means a lot to get this award and keep the trophy at Mississippi State.”

Jackson said, “It just goes to show that we’re a great program. We have great players come through each year, and for us to keep winning just means we’re doing something right.”

MSU’s Quinndary Weatherspoon won the Howell Trophy in 2018 and 2019 while Victoria Vivians won the Gillom Trophy an unprecedented four times in a row prior to Teaira McCowan last year.

That trophy is a little silver lining to a disappointing Sunday for the Mississippi State women’s team who lost in the SEC Tournament championship game to South Carolina for the fourth time in five years, 76-62 final.

On the men’s side, a much better Saturday as the Bulldogs get their revenge over in-state rival Ole Miss with a 69-44 home triumph.
