Mississippi State is Super Regional bound
USM’s quest to return to its first Super Regional since 2009 was scheduled to start at 1 p.m. yesterday. Long story short, Southern Miss saw its season come to a screeching halt early this morning.
That was after close to five hours of weather delays and two hard fought games as Mississippi State fought their way out of the loser’s bracket with four wins in two days. The last of those was an 8-6 victory for the Bulldogs over the Golden Eagles, ending a record setting 50 win season for the latter.
It was an emotional roller coaster for the Black and Gold, while it’s on to face LSU in the Super Regionals for MSU. Mississippi State Head Baseball Coach Andy Cannizaro said, “We’re fired up, man. I think we were all talking about how we wish we would just get on the bus and go there now. So excited, fired up, can’t wait to get down to Baton Rouge.”
Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry said, “What I don’t want to lose in this whole thing is ‘yes, our season ended today, but what a great season it was.’”
Southern Miss first baseman Dylan Burdeaux said, “I wouldn’t say any lasting words. I mean, this ride has been unbelievable. It’s definitely one I’m never going to forget.”
Mississippi State third baseman/ left fielder Cody Brown said, “It’s tough to have your back against the wall like that and you don’t know if it’s going to be your last day wearing a Mississippi State jersey, but it’s awesome and we push through it. And I get to wear it for at least two more games now.”
Biloxi native Cody Brown was named MVP of the Hattiesburg Regional.
