Mississippi State secures biggest win over LSU in series history
The football rivalry between Mississippi State and LSU dates back 111 years and counting. On Saturday, the Bulldogs and Tigers got together once again for their first SEC West action of the year.
Starkville was the site of the historic fireworks display, one that saw MSU beat the Tigers in convincing fashion. The 37-7 victory was Mississippi State’s largest over LSU in program history. The Bulldogs scored the final 30 points of the game and never looked back.
Ninth year Head Coach Dan Mullen credits his first triumph over the Bayou Bengals since 2014 in large part to the raucous crowd at Davis Wade Stadium. “Really pleased with how our guys came out, took on the challenge of playing an extremely talented LSU team. And obviously I think the environment had a lot to do with it. That’s what playing in the SEC West does, you get that home field advantage. Our student body, our fans, the crowd was unbelievable.”
Mississippi State Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald said, “Perfect start to the SEC opening and we can’t be more excited, we can’t be more thrilled about it. We’re ready to come in tomorrow and get back to work.”
With the win, MSU is now ranked at number 17 in the AP poll and number 19 in the USA Today Coach’s Poll. Next up is a top 20 match up with number 11 Georgia.
