Mississippi State remains unbeaten
For Mississippi State defensive lineman Jeffrey Simmons, it’s been an uphill climb before ever taking his first snap at the division I level. He’s starting to become known for his play on the field as he continues to repair his image.
Just two games into his sophomore year, Simmons is proving to be the real deal, having been named the SEC defensive lineman of the week earlier today.
He was a key cog in MSU’s 52-21 win at Louisiana Tech in which he blocked a PAT, blocked and recovered a punt for a touchdown, and then returned a fumble 90 yards for a score.
His two touchdowns in a game are the most for a Bulldogs defensive player since Jonathan Banks did it in 2009 and those two touchdowns are more than three SEC teams scored on Saturday. Mississippi State Head Football Coach Dan Mullen said, “That was pretty exciting to see. He’s a guy that works his tail off and I know a very talented player but don’t mistake that for the fact that how hard he works every day at practice to be able to put himself in a position to make those plays.”
“I’m way more confident because I feel like I work way harder than coming in as a freshman. I was way banged up coming in as a freshman and I couldn’t do every team activity. And this past summer and winter, I worked my tail off every day. And coming into this season I was like this is my season,” said Simmons.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday with a 6 p.m. start versus LSU in Starkville. That game will be aired on ESPN.
