Mississippi State continues Super Regional run

On the back of its 16th NCAA Regional Championship, the Mississippi State baseball program is one of 16 schools remaining for the fifth straight season.

That makes the Diamond Dawgs one of just ten teams in the regional era to own a streak of that length dating back to 1999.

Now, they’re the only team with an active run of four or more straight Super Regional appearances.

Yesterday, the Bulldogs took down Campbell 6-5 in the Starkville regional final, capping off a three-game sweep of the four-team field.

Next up for number 7 national seed MSU is hosting 10-seed Notre Dame in one of just two Super Regionals featuring teams that swept in the regional round.

The Fighting Irish just went 19 years in between supers, but MSU Head Coach Chris Lemonis says you can’t play with the past. “We’re in a really good spot. I mean we’ve played really good baseball. I like where we’re at. We’ve got a tough weekend coming up. There’s not an easy Super Regional in the country and we feel like we’ve got one of the hottest teams in the country coming in here, so we’re going to have to have a great week of practice and get ready to have another great weekend. But I like where we’re at right now. Our team is in a great spot.”)

MSU and Notre Dame lead off the best-of-three series at 1 p.m. Saturday from Dudy Noble Field on ESPN.

The rest of the field is set for the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament as the top four national seeds take care of business on their road to Omaha.
