Mississippi seafood law has taken into effect, MS Commissioner Andy Gipson visits the Coast
BILOXI, Miss. (WXXV) – As of July 1st, Mississippi’s Seafood Labeling Law has taken effect. All seafood sold in Mississippi must be clearly labeled as either imported or domestic. Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson visited the coast to advocate for the importance of American seafood that’s harvested, raised, and processed in the US.
This is the very first time an Ag Commissioner has taken a trip to an oyster farm. The oyster industry on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is vital to the region. Mark Harvard of Two Crackers Oyster Company stresses the demand for Mississippi-raised seafood on residents’ tables.
Per the Seafood Labeling Law, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce will begin conducting seafood labeling inspections across Mississippi’s upper 76 counties. Mississippi Department of Marine Resources will be the primary Agency in the six southernmost counties along the coast.
