Mississippi Power volunteers clean up Turkey Creek

Mississippi Power volunteers partnered with the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain to do a clean-up at Turkey Creek.

This clean-up was a scheduled Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service project.

It was one of three on the Coast. Mississippi Power had a group of volunteers at Gulfport’s Wholistic Garden and at Sue’s Home, a women’s shelter in Ocean Springs.

Mississippi Power also partnered with service organizations in Hattiesburg and Meridian.

At Turkey Creek, volunteers collected a variety of debris including tires, litter, grocery store carts, and glass. Mississippi Power Customer Service Manager Arnie Williams said, “What I really like about what we accomplished today — you know, I could come and pick up trash. Certainly, I would not have picked up that much. But what I’d like to communicate to you today is that one thing Dr. Martin Luther King in his legacy wanted to communicate is teamwork, and I think that’s what you see behind me here.”

Sara Guice with the Land Trust said, “The Land Trust is about 20 years old. We have 118 properties and we manage 10,000 acres. We do that all with just a staff of three people. So, whenever we can partner with our community partners and neighbors, it means the world to us.”
