Mississippi Power offers winter energy efficiency tips
With the holiday season approaching and cooler temperatures in the air, Mississippi Power is offering tips for customers to save on energy and keep their bills as low as possible.
They suggest setting the thermostat to 68 degrees and open curtains to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home.
Also, make sure to keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window wide open during the winter, it allows warm air to go right up the chimney.
Also, replace your heating system’s filter once a month or as needed. Mississippi Power Public Relations Kaila Griffith said, “Now is the time to make sure your home is ready for the winter season. One of the things that we encourage our customers to do is go ahead and get a licensed professional to come and check out your heating system before you are really relying on it heavily. You want to make sure that it is running as safely as possible. So, now is the time to go ahead and get a license professional to come and just check it out.”
Mississippi Power also suggests turning down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting. Water heating can account for 14 to 25 percent of the energy consumed in your home.
