Mississippi Power helps local students celebrate Read Across America Day

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- Monday was Read Across America Day and volunteers across South Mississippi are helping turn the page on literacy.

Mississippi Power employees spent the morning in classrooms at North Gulfport Elementary and Middle School reading to students and putting brand new books in their hands.

Teams of employees spread out across campus, reading to pre-k students and kindergarteners.

The volunteers didn’t just read stories, each child received a book to take home, encouraging families to continue reading long after the school day ends.

At the end of last year, the Mississippi Power Foundation invested in United Way of South Mississippi’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, ensuring that 400 local children could enroll in the program.

For these students, Read Across America Day was more than a celebration, it was an investment in their future, one page at a time.

Efforts like this will continue throughout the year as part of its commitment to education across its service area.
