Mississippi Power cuts ribbon on modernized Bayou Casotte Substation

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WXXV) — Mississippi Power and Jackson County leaders cut the ribbon on a modernized substation in Pascagoula on Wednesday.

The Bayou Casotte Substation has been upgraded after 70 years of serving residents and businesses in Jackson County. This facility is now set to provide reliable energy for decades to come, even standing resilient in the midst of storms.

120 Mississippi Power and Southern Company team members were involved in the 12-month demolition and rebuild of the substation. The company reports no accidents or interruptions to customers during that time.

General Manager of Transmission Stephen Schruff explained the current impact of the facility, and what it could do in the future.

“This substation — the previous one — served us 70 years very well,” Schruff said. “This will service at least 70 more years, so all of the homes, businesses, industrial customers you see around here… this is where they get the power from, substations like this. This will continue to serve the existing, but also the growth — we had a recent announcement of growth just down the road here that this will serve, and there’s capacity available and we could add another transforming substation should we need to for more growth here.”
