Mississippi Power and MGCCC team up to provide line worker training
The leaders of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Mississippi Power held a signing ceremony this morning for their new electric line worker training program.
The electric line worker non-credit training program officially started on September 6th and is a one semester, 13-week program.
Students in the program receive specialized instruction in certification areas required by the electric power industry.
Once students complete the program, they are prepared for an entry-level position as an electrical power-line installer or repairer. Mississippi Power CEO and President Anthony Wilson said, “This is the beginning of a great partnership I think to develop line workers for really the industry.”
MGCCC President Dr. Mary Graham said, “We had 15 people that will be training in this first class. We will do three classes. We had over 500 individuals that were interested in the program.”
The curriculum focuses on basic safety, basic electricity, pole climbing, and bucket truck operation, along with other skills needed for entry-level work in the utilities field.
