Mississippi man tried for same crime 6 times, freed months after court rules racial bias

A Mississippi man who has been tried six times for the same crime was granted bond yesterday.

Curtis Flowers was arrested 23 years ago for the murders of four people at a furniture store in Winona.

The first three guilty verdicts against him were thrown out by the state supreme court. The next two trials ended in hung juries.

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned his fourth conviction in June, citing racial bias in jury selection.

The 49-year-old appeared in court Monday, where he was given a $250,000 bond. His attorney said a person, who wishes to remain anonymous, posted $25,000, the 10% needed to secure Flowers’ release.

Flowers must wear an electronic monitor while he waits to find out if he’ll face a seventh trial.
