Mississippi Highway Patrol concludes Labor Day travel period

Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded the Labor Day travel period Monday at midnight. The enforcement period began on Friday at 6 a.m.

MHP issued a total of 10,026 citations, arrested 270 for impaired driving, and 1,089 drivers for seat belt violations.

MHP also investigated 143 wrecks which caused 46 injuries. Three of the wrecks were deadly, resulting in three deaths. Those deadly accidents happened in George, Washington, and Lauderdale counties.

This Labor Day weekend saw an increased number of citations and wrecks from last year. Last year, there were 6,735 citations given out and 186 DUIs were given.

There were a lower number of wrecks. Last year had 146 wrecks, six of them being fatal and resulting in six deaths.
