Mississippi Heroes looking for volunteers to build wheelchair ramps

Since the start of their “Ramp it Up” program in August of 2023, Mississippi Heroes has been able to build 20 at-home wheelchair ramps. While this is amazing, there are still 30 people who have been approved for a ramp and are eagerly waiting… with more applications coming in daily.

Mississippi Heroes needs volunteers and donors to help meet this need in the community. The cost of a ramp starts at $2,000 and increases depending on the size and materials.

If you’re unable to sponsor a ramp, Mississippi Heroes also needs volunteers to help build the ramps, as well as donate materials such as wood and screws.

Mississippi Heroes Executive Director Katherine Sutton says she believes there are thousands of people just on the Mississippi Gulf Coast who desperately need one of these ramps.

“Almost 100% of what we take in goes towards the ramps,” Sutton said. “We do still have our other caregiver programs. We’re still doing caregiver reveals, but this is a really big need in the community. Nobody should be stuck in their house. I mean, we have some caregivers that they literally have to call the fire department or EMS to get their loved ones out to go to a doctor’s appointment. You can imagine if there was a fire or a safety issue where they just can’t get out of the house.”
