Mississippi Heroes launches ‘Ramp it up 100’ campaign

The local nonprofit Mississippi Heroes is launching a new initiative.  ‘Ramp it Up 100’ is a campaign to raise $50,000 to help build wheelchair ramps across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Mississippi Heroes is looking for 100 local businesses, organizations, or individuals to get involved.

Mississippi Heroes President Eric Alvarez says the need continues to grow. “In the local area we have about 50 ramp requests right now, and every time we build a ramp, we get a few new requests. It’s always a revolving door so we get more requests every day.”

By donating $500 each, the goal is to raise $50,000 which helps meet their growing demand for wheelchair ramps across the Coast.

Executive Director Katherine Sutton says supporters can see the impact of their donation firsthand. “Also, businesses that support can come out to the location, so they can meet the people we’re building ramps for.”

Alvarez says it is moments like those that drive their mission. “When you see a person come out of their home or have accessible freedom after not having that freedom, always relying on someone else to get them in or out of the homes, or EMS to get them to and from their doctor’s appointments, then you understand what our initiative is trying to do.”
