Mississippi Has Best Community College System
Mississippi is home to the nation’s oldest community college system and a recent study puts it at the top of the list.
Mississippi’s two year college system began in the 1920’s and was the nation’s first state-wide community college system. Today it is considered one of the strongest in the country after a recent study conducted by Wallet-Hub named our system the best in the nation for 2015.
MGCCC Jefferson Davis Campus Vice President Jonathan Woodward said, “As everyone knows in Mississippi that’s been a resident for a while, quite often we’re ranking at the lowest end of those indicators where we want to be high. This is something Mississippi residents, coastal residents can be proud of.”
It’s also something students can be proud of. MGCCC freshman Dominique Ehret said, “I believe it and I’m glad I picked a community college and especially Gulf Coast. You get better benefits than like at a university. They just kind of throw it at you and at community college they really help you and care.”
Mississippi’s high ranking can be attributed to factors like cost, class size, graduation rates, and the average starting salaries of community college graduates.
A six year study conducted by the National Student Clearing House shows Mississippi community colleges with a completion rate of 46 percent. That’s nearly 10 percent higher than the national average.
“It’s not good enough for a student to come and get a few classes. We want to see students finish and then get a job,” said Woodward, “Because ultimately, college completion leads to jobs and that leads to a better economy for all of Mississippi and the entire Coast.”
And if you missed August enrollment dates here on the Coast, it’s not too late. “We have a series of late start classes that begin periodically throughout the semester. So, if you didn’t get in on those early fall classes that start in August, it certainly is not too late. We have 300 classes today that we’ll begin to open up and already open and continue to open until sometime into the fall semester,” said Woodward.
