Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic
Some of the best fishing teams around the world are in Biloxi this weekend with hopes of reeling in some big fish and win some big bucks at the 22nd annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic.
One hundred and seventeen teams are putting their skill and luck to test to earn a chance at a chunk of the 2.1 million dollar payout. The Billfish Classic is rated among the top five sport fishing events in the world in total payouts.
Any angler lucky enough to land a new state record for yellowfin tuna will take home half a million dollars.
News 25 spoke to the 17-year-old who brought in the first catch of the day and set the standard high with a marlin weighing in at 739 pounds. Angler Alex Krake said, “We hooked it yesterday evening at 7:10 and fought it all though the night until 5:55 we caught her. So, it was almost 12 hours. It’s all about technique, all the big guys, just technique; you don’t need to be a big man to catch a big fish.”
If you’re interested in checking out who wins the classic, the public is invited to the weigh-ins for free at the Point Cadet Marina. Scales will reopen tomorrow from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
