Mississippi Dept. of Public safety transfers KKK artifacts to Dept. of Archives and History
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has transferred a collection of 1960s-era Ku Klux Klan materials to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
The items were discovered as DPS staff prepared to move into a new headquarters. Officials say the collection includes full Klan regalia, along with documents found inside a small suitcase, such as meeting notes, ledgers, and even news clippings about the Civil Rights Era, including information related to the Freedom Riders.
State leaders say preserving these artifacts helps document a dark chapter in Mississippi history and provides important context for future generations.
The archives department will now process the material with plans to make it digitally accessible to the public.
