Mississippi Department of Education launching new campaign for reading scores

Score

The Mississippi Department of Education is launching a new campaign called “Know Your Child’s Reading Score.”

This comes in an effort for parents and guardians of kindergarten through third grade students to be informed of their child’s reading ability and support offered by school districts.

The literacy-based promotion act requires school districts to access reading skills of students in kindergarten through third grade at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year.

Schools administer screeners to determine the students’ reading ability.

If the score indicates a student may be at risk of having a deficiency in reading, school districts are required to provide written notification until the deficiency is remediated.

If a student is not reading on grade level, an individual reading plan must be created and teacher/parent meetings will need to happen.
