Mississippi Aquarium releases 13 Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles
Mississippi Aquarium team members released 13 endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles into the Mississippi Sound.
Twelve of these turtles are the third wave that was released from a group that was cold-stunned and quickly flown to Mississippi in December of 2022. The 13th was brought down in 2021.
Since the turtle’s arrival, animal care facilities, and veterinary teams have been working in concert to return these Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles back to full health and into the wild.
This specific release represents a huge milestone for the Mississippi Aquarium because they have released their 100th Kemp’s Ridley. Associate Veterinarian Sean Perry said, “This is kind of our passion and we love being able to contribute to the environment, conserve endangered species, and release them back into their native range.”
Perry went on to say that this is only the beginning and they’re looking forward to releasing more turtles in the future.
