Mississippi Aquarium celebrates National Penguin Day with special announcement
Now this is some cool news! The Mississippi Aquarium is celebrating National Penguin Day with the announcement of a coming attraction for Christmas.
The aquarium revealed they are working on a light show with new technology called projection mapping to tell a story about the aquarium’s penguin colony.
The working title is a ‘Penguin’s Journey: Home for Christmas.’ It is set to be installed by MDSX Creative and SRPK Lighting and presented by sponsor Coca-Cola.
Plans call for the experience to be projected on the side of the Aquatic Wonders building, with other multimedia components spread throughout the campus.
Aquarium officials tell us the show is intended to be a complimentary experience to the Harbor Lights Show at Jones Park. They’re working with city officials to create a combination ticket to see both shows for one price. Patrick Pearson with Mississippi Aquarium said, “We are in the midst of a capital campaign to try to build a new penguin habitat. We don’t really have penguins on campus yet — we do VIP encounters with penguins, where they come from our offsite facility. So, part of this is generating awareness to raise the additional money we need for our new penguin habitat.”
Aquarium leaders also say they are working with the animal care team to possibly have penguins in campus every night during the event.
