Mississippi Aquarium celebrates Dolphin Awareness Month
March is Dolphin Awareness Month and who better to tell us about these marine mammals than the Mississippi Aquarium?
They use their four bottlenose dolphins, Fin, Archer, Axel, and Nigel, to educate on the importance of animal conservation.
Dolphins live in the Gulf of Mexico and the aquarium teaches visitors about the important roles they play in ecosystems as top predators. Senior Animal Care Specialist Molly Orr said, “They can really determine the health of the Gulf of Mexico and just educating everyone on ways they can help them here in Mississippi. So, whether that’s participating in a beach clean-up, recycling your old fishing line, and remembering that it is illegal to interact with them if you see them out in the ocean and you should enjoy them from a safe distance.”
If you’d like to meet the bottlenose dolphins, the Mississippi Aquarium offers daily educational presentations and has a dolphin encounter program.
