Mississippi proposing ‘The Fair Minimum Wage Act’
The Mississippi Legislature proposed a bill, called “The Fair Minimum Wage Act,” to put the state’s minimum wage at $15 per hour.
House Bill 16 was authored by Representative Solomon Osborne of District 32, saying in the bill the current minimum wage is insufficient to keep families out of poverty.
IF the bill passes, the Mississippi Department of Employment Security would calculate an adjusted minimum wage rate in direct proportion to an increase of decrease in the United States Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index on September 30 of every year.
The adjusted minimum wage would take effect on the following January 1st.
The wage for government workers would be capped at $20.
Also introduced was House Bill 71, instead establishing the minimum wage in the state at $10 per hour.
