Minor League Baseball stands ground on 2020 plan
First reports of contraction, now Minor League Baseball is falling victim to another report officials claim to be false.
Yesterday, MiLB Contributor Joe Doyle reported the minor league season to have been canceled amidst reports of Major League Baseball’s plan for a condensed three division campaign, starting no later than July 2nd.
According to the report, multiple agents representing minor league players were informally advised that there wouldn’t be a 2020 season.
Instead, a subsequent development league, training, and potentially games out of spring training facilities is a possibility.
Here’s what league officials have to say about that report: “The report circulating around that the 2020 Minor League Baseball season has been canceled is false. MiLB has confirmed with Major League Baseball that no such statement was made. No decision has been made as to when it will be safe to begin the 2020 season.”
All that being said, a huge portion of revenue in Minor League Baseball comes from ticket sales and concessions which means the writing is on the wall if we’re looking at a season without fans.
