Mike Federico introduced at ULM
Last week, former Southern Miss Pitching Coach Mike Federico became the 12th ever head baseball coach at Louisiana Monroe.
Earlier today, he was officially introduced as such. Coach Federico arrives at his new digs after spending the last eight years at his alma mater where he was in charge of the pitching staff and catchers.
He was named the Conference USA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015 and helped USM get to four regionals during his stay in Hattiesburg.
Now, head man of the Warhawks, Federico is embracing what he learned as a Golden Eagle which is trying to leave it better than you found it. “I want to shape the young men that we’re coaching into productive citizens, so when they leave here they can contribute to society in a positive way. Whether they’re playing in the big leagues or they’re working in the local mill. Whatever they have to do, but I want them to be productive citizens and be able to give value to their community wherever they may move to from here.”
In 2015, Southern Miss had the lowest ERA of any team in the league under Coach Federico’s watch.
Replacing Federico in Hattiesburg looks to be Louisiana Tech Associate Head Coach Christian Ostrander who was previously the head coach at Gulfport High School in 2007 and 2008.
Elsewhere at Southern Miss, Taylor Braley has officially signed with the Miami Marlins for $250,000, according to mlbpipeline.com.
Already the Baseball America Freshmen of the Year, his former teammate Matt Wallner was tabbed as the like by D1baseball.com earlier today.
Meanwhile, former Mississippi State slugger Brent Rooker was honored by the SEC as the Kramer Male Athlete of the Year.
In the high school ranks, former Biloxi Indian Trey Shaffer has been named a second-team All American by MaxPreps. He’ll be taking the mound for Southeastern Louisiana in the spring.
