MHP releases New Year’s holiday travel numbers
The Mississippi Highway Patrol New Year’s holiday travel period ended January 1st at midnight, beginning on December 30th at 6 in the morning.
Over the enforcement period, 77 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence and 119 wrecks were investigated – 21 of which resulted in injuries.
In total, 4,865 citations were issued.
There was one deadly wreck involving a pedestrian that resulted in a death, happening in Hancock County on New Year’s Day.
Thirty minutes past midnight, MHP responded to a deadly crash on Highway 607.
The driver was from Slidell and was driving south when they hit a person walking in the middle of the highway. Hancock County Coroner Jeff Hair said the victim, 34-year-old Christopher Gray of Picayune, was identified from fingerprints using a mobile biometric scanner provided by the Department of Public Safety and the Office of Homeland Security.
Gray was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of blunt force trauma.
The crash remains under investigation by MHP.
