MHP arrests man wanted for attempted murder in North Carolina

Mississippi Highway Patrol has captured a suspect wanted for attempted murder in North Carolina.

MHP said in a press release that troopers tried to stop a vehicle matching a “be on the lookout” description for a suspect wanted in North Carolina. The vehicle was seen traveling north of Poplarville on I-59.

Instead of pulling over, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Freddy Renteria, led troopers on a chase before stopping on I-59 south of Hattiesburg. Renteria was arrested and charged with felony fleeing. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound sustained after the pursuit.

He is currently awaiting extradition to North Carolina on the attempted murder charge.
