Memorial for Fallen Firefighters

This morning, three of Biloxi’s bravest who lost their lives in the line of duty were honored at a graveside memorial by family and members of the fire department.

Anthony Bernard Rousseau died on March 14th, 1951 after he was crushed by a fire truck responding to a call.

It was on October 20th, 1986 when Carl Ohr and Edwin Jacquet lost their lives while fighting a house fire on Reynoir Street. Ohr’s oxygen tank ran low and in an effort to save him, Jacquet threw his own helmet out a nearby window, a firefighter’s last ditch effort to alert others of distress.

Carl Ohr’s sister, Paula, was on hand and told News 25 she is thankful for the improvements she has seen in fireman training in the past few years. “Because these two gentleman, Carl Ohr and Kurt Jacquet, died the way they did, a lot of improvements have come and money has been found and improvements made for the fire department and to keep these guys safe and keep us safe as a community, but it is important to us as a family that you don’t feel alone.”
