Memorial Day Travel
Expect a lot of people to be traveling this Memorial Day Weekend.
AAA says it expects more than 39 million Americans to travel more than 50 miles for the unofficial start of summer. That is nearly three percent more than last year and the third straight year of increases. More than 88 percent of those travelers will drive to their destinations.
Local police departments urge drivers to wear seatbelts, practice defensive driving, and avoid distracted driving behind the wheel. Sgt. Josh Bromen with Gulfport PD said, “This is the start of the summer and also the start of the 100 deadliest days for our teenage drivers, Memorial Day to Labor Day is the deadliest time for teenage drivers. Again, as parents sit down with your kids and just remind them we’ve all be there where you think you can do anything, just remind them ‘yeah, summer’s out and it’s a great time, but a decision you make now can have a lifetime impact.’”
AAA says the jump is due to increased confidence in the U.S. economy which means consumers are spending more and using that money to travel.
