Memorial Day on the beach
Last week, Mississippi Coast residents were preparing sandbags for the forecast 50 to 90 percent chance of rain during Memorial Day Weekend, but instead they were able to enjoy temperatures in the high 80s.
The unforeseen sunshine prompted many people to hit the beaches for a day of fun while also remembering and honoring those who died in active military service.
News 25 spoke to Patt Pigott, the owner of Get Wet Inc., a beach rental service on the Biloxi Beach, who tells us many of his reservations were cancelled over the weekend.
Pigott says that the change in forecast brought a last minute surge of tourists to the Coast. “It’s one of those things that could have been a lot better, but could have been a lot worse also. You kind of gotta be thankful for what you got right now because it could have been raining right now. If the forecast could have been a little better we might have had a better weekend.”
Pigott says preparing for a storm like Alberto could cost his business nearly $2,000.
