MEMA requesting additional damage assessments

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has requested additional damage assessments after severe weather hit the state on June 18th and 19th.

After damage was assessed in Jackson and Jasper counties, FEMA found the state has not met the damage threshold of $5.2 million to request a federal disaster declaration.

Both counties’ public infrastructure damage was $4.1 million in eligible costs.

The counties being assessed are:

  • Claiborne
  • Copiah
  • Covington
  • Jefferson
  • Jefferson Davis
  • Lawrence
  • Leake
  • Neshoba
  • Newton
  • Rankin
  • Scott
  • Simpson
  • Smith
  • Wayne

They are not being assessed for individual damage, only public assistance.

A reminder, FEMA assistance is not available for Jackson and Jasper County residents.

The state’s original deadline to request a disaster declaration is July 20th.
