Meggan Monday: Seniors Raise funds for local nonprofit

This week we want to introduce you to a group of seniors who want to help others and have a little fun in the process.

Let’s go to Summerfield Living Center in Gulfport for more on these active seniors.

Summerfield Senior Living Community Relations Director Susan Jones said, “I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying ‘it takes a village,’ and it truly does. I think their idea was ‘let’s look in our own village and see what we can do.’”

Summerfield Senior Living resident Dolores Beach said, “We support the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence. We have done very well raising money. I read the paper and I look at the news and I see how much violence is going on in the home. It’s too much. So, we decided we’d support those who have been put out of their home for this Christmas.”

“We have raised over $2,500. I still have $500 I haven’t claimed yet. This is our fourth fundraiser. We have a raffle, draw for those on September 1st. We have a cake sale. We made adult clothing protectors and sold them. We had a carnival. So, we’ve been busy doing a lot of things. I’ve got a lot of people helping me. This is really called Cardo. You deal out of a deck of cards. The caller calls out a card and whoever has that card in their stack they put in the middle, the first one out of cards says ‘bingo.’”

“They’ve done small fundraisers, but they’re small and they’re mighty. They’ve pulled in a lot of family members. They’ve been able to get donations and things like that. So, it’s really heartwarming to see folks want to give back as much as they do.”
