Meggan Monday: Our Lady of Fatima opens new gym
This week on Meggan Monday, Meggan is telling us about a moment in Biloxi 63 years in the making.
What a day it was at Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School in Biloxi as they celebrated its new gym. The elementary schools first gym in 63 years. So, it calls for quite the celebration and now this multi-million-dollar, multipurpose facility will be the host for all sorts of athletic activities for these students and a wonderful celebration for Our Lady of Fatima families and it is a day to remember.
Principal Cindy Hahn said, “It’s been a long process. This school has been here for 63 years, so it’s been a 63-year process. But in the last 5 years, we had a group of families that were really proactive and trying to help us raise funds and trying to make it a possibility. And then Father Henry, who is our parish pastor, he believed in it as well. So, he really has been the one who spearheaded and get it going for us. He provided the funding and then we had to provide some other support. We have a great basketball team we’ve had a great athletic program but we had no place to have anything. We had to always play somewhere else. So, we had a need and we had the wonderful families that believed in that need and made it happen.”
Sixth grader Miles Mitchell said, “It feels amazing. We get to play here now every single game and then I want to win the championship here.”
Sixth grader Philomene Kirk said, “We get to be the first sixth grade class to play in this gym and we won’t be in enemy territory. We’ll be in Falcon territory.”
