Meet the ‘Hawaiian Yorkies’: Viral Gulf Coast dogs chase remote-control car

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WXXV)- While normally dogs enjoy a game of fetch, one local family says their pups prefers something a bit fast and furious.

WXXV’s Brynne Baxley introduces us to a pack of Yorkies who are going viral over chasing something you might not expect.

It’s not ball. It’s not a stick. It’s a remote-control car. For owners Kirkland and Gretchen Garbett, it’s all it takes to get their eight Yorkies running wild. “They’re originally bred for ratting, chasing rats and squirrels and what not. I said, well if they are going to be doing that and we don’t have anything around to capture, I’m going to go ahead and try this remote-control car.”

Each pup has a Hawaiian-inspired name and their own personality. “It reminds me of home because if I need these three specific dogs it’s Kai, Luna, Kona, come here or Hana Lei come here.”

But one thing they all have in common is, they love the chase. “Before we even pull up to the field, if they see any field now, they’re automatically barking in the car because they think they’re going to go chase a car. Even if I turn a blinker on, they think we’re near a field. Boom they start barking right away.”

They may be small, but don’t let their size fool you. The couple tells WXXV the first car they bought was too slow so they had to upgrade. Because the second that car hits the ground, it’s game on.  “And it’s good to see them get a little exercise and work as a team to take down the vehicle.”

They started their Facebook page, Hawaiian Yorkies, back in November. After posting videos of their speedy pups, they’ve grown to nearly 70,000 followers. “They just love it, they all say it’s one of the best videos out there, it’s made their day, it’s made them smile.”

For these dogs, a game of fetch just doesn’t compare.
