Meet B1 and B2, the two new baby penguins at the Mississippi Aquarium
Some new feathered friends have arrived at the Mississippi Aquarium. The little guys names are B1 and B2, and they’re the newest additions to the African Penguin colony which partially calls the aquarium home. Born just weeks ago during the winter storm in South Mississippi, they’re already building up quite the fan base.
When it comes to the parents of the new chicks, Alexa Delaune, the VP of Veterinary Services at Missisippi Aquarium, says it takes a village to raise these little guys.
“The parents are both the same, but one of them has a foster pair. The parents are Pumpkin and Blue so if anyone has ever met Pumpkin and Blue you’ve met the parents here at Mississippi Aquarium. Penguins usually lay two eggs, so we had another pair, Fiona and Duke, and they’re actually biologically related so we didn’t want them to have a baby. We gave them Pumpkin and Blue’s second egg to raise.”
When can you come and see the new chicks? Well it all depends on when their new home is built.
“We’re very feverishly trying to raise money to build a penguin habitat so you can see the adults and the babies. Our hope is that we’ll be able to get all that money soon so that we can start the exhibit process.”
It’s too early to tell the chicks’ genders, as they need to have a blood test taken when they are a little older to determine their genders.
