MDWFP hosts public meeting on Chronic Wasting Disease
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks hosted a public meeting Wednesday night.
The meeting was held at the West Harrison High School to discuss Chronic Wasting Disease in deer in the state.
The Mississippi coast has seen one case — leading to a new Harrison County management zone.
As a reminder, carcasses are not to be transported outside of any Chronic Wasting Disease management zone to avoid transmission and supplemental feeding is banned in all areas.
The new management zone will not go into effect until February 16th when deer season ends.
“The main thing is that we need hunters to still be hunters. Hunters are going to be the key to successfully managing this disease,” said Russ Walsh, the chief of staff of MDWFP. “So we want them to stay engaged, we want them to learn as much as they can, and keep on being hunters.”
