MDOT projects make progress in southeast Mississippi

HATTIESBURG, MISS. – Commissioner Charles Busby, Southern Transportation District, has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in south Mississippi.

“Infrastructure projects across southeast Mississippi are making steady progress,” said Busby. “From widening highways to adding new signage and resurfacing roads, these projects help protect the people who travel our state’s roadways and represent an investment in safer communities and stronger connections.”

Major I-10 widening project progresses in Harrison and Hancock counties

Crews have made headway on a major project to widen I-10 from four to six lanes from Diamondhead to County Farm Rd. in Harrison and Hancock counties. The scope of work also includes technological upgrades and the construction of a multi-use path and a noise barrier wall near the Diamondhead exit.

Paving is nearly complete in the new lane on the westbound side, and on the eastbound side, paving is ongoing, and stone base placement is almost finished. Two of the three bridges within the project area have now been widened, and all beams have been placed on the Wolf River bridge. All bridge widening work should be complete by the end of the year, possibly sooner.

Near the Diamondhead exit, pipe pile and panel installation is progressing at the noise barrier wall, and lighting installation is underway at the multi-use path.

The $155 million contract was awarded to Huey P. Stockstill, LLC of Picayune and is expected to be completed in 2027.

Massive construction project makes headway on State Route 57 in Jackson County

Work is currently ahead of schedule on a massive $212.6 million project to widen and create a new, four-lane alignment on approximately nine miles of State Route 57 from I-10 to Vancleave in Jackson County.

Earthwork and drainage installations are underway at the Gautier Vancleave Rd. interchange and the 57 Connector interchange. Several of the 13 bridges are now complete, and all others are under construction. Stone base is being placed in various locations in preparation for upcoming paving. Before the end of the year, crews plan to swap traffic onto a portion of new alignment from I-10 to just north of Humphrey Rd.

The project was awarded to W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Company of Jackson and is expected to wrap up in 2027.

Safety improvement project on I-59 continues in Forrest and Jones counties

A $66.7 million safety improvement project is ongoing in Forrest and Jones counties on I-59 from the Lamar County line to just south of Moselle.

Crews are rubblizing existing pavement in the northbound lanes between U.S. 49 and the Bouie River. A final lift of asphalt has been placed in the northbound and southbound lanes from McPhail Rd. to the northern end of the project. Before the project is complete, a layer of Open-Graded Friction Course (OGFC) will be applied to the entire project.

This project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders of Laurel and is expected to be completed in summer 2026.

U.S. 49 widening project underway in Harrison County

A major project to widen U.S. 49 from four to six lanes from O’Neal Rd. to north of School Rd. is making progress. The scope of work includes the construction of a displaced left-turn intersection, also referred to as a continuous flow intersection, at State Route 53 and U.S. 49.

Lane widening is nearing completion on the southbound side with paving ongoing. With work nearly complete on the southbound side, crews have begun work on the northbound side with drainage installation underway. Earthwork continues at the intersection of U.S. 49 and SR 53.

The $44.9 million project was awarded to Necaise Brothers of Gulfport and is expected to be completed in 2026.

Diamondhead I-10 interchange reconstruction project nears completion in Hancock County

Work is nearing completion on a $17 million project to reconstruct the I-10 Diamondhead interchange (Exit 16), which involves overpass and ramp widening, the construction of three roundabouts and the addition of a multi-use path.

Nearly all work is complete with the exception of bridge end work and railing installation.

The project was awarded to T. L. Wallace Construction, Inc. of Columbia and is expected to wrap up in 2026.

U.S. 11 bridge replacement project nears completion in Pearl River County

A $21.9 million bridge replacement project is nearing completion on U.S. 11 over Hobolochitto Creek in Pearl River County. Bridge construction is complete, and work on the approaches is almost finished.

The new bridge is being constructed adjacent to the existing bridge, minimizing traffic interruptions. The project was awarded to Cotton Creek Transport of Laurel and is expected to wrap up in late 2025.

Pedestrian improvement project underway on U.S. 49 in Harrison County

A pedestrian walkway is being constructed along U.S. 49 from Turkey Creek to just north of Creosote Rd. Drainage work is nearly complete and work has started on the walkway. The project will also include designated crosswalks and a median barrier with fencing to enhance pedestrian safety.

The $14.5 million project was awarded to Necaise Brothers and is expected to be completed in 2026.

State Route 63 bridge preservation project nears completion in Jackson County

Work is nearing completion on a bridge preservation project on State Route 63 over the Escatawpa River in Jackson County. All major work, which included painting, sandblasting and bearing pad replacement, is complete, and work is now taking place on ship navigation lights beneath the bridge.

The $16.9 million project was awarded to Gibson & Associates of Balch Springs, Texas, and is expected to wrap up in fall 2025.

Overlay project on I-10 nears completion in Hancock County

In Hancock County, a project is nearing completion to remove and replace about 17 miles of OGFC pavement on I-10 from the Pearl River bridge to Diamondhead. Milling and paving work is complete.

The $10.4 million project was awarded to Warren Paving of Hattiesburg and is anticipated to wrap up this fall.

Overlay project on I-59 nears completion in Jones County

A project is nearing completion in Jones County to remove and repave the OGFC pavement on about 20 miles of I-59 from north of Rocky Creek to the Jasper County line. Paving and clearing are now complete and minor repair work remains.

The $10.3 million project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders and is anticipated to wrap up this fall.

Overlay project on State Route 57 now complete in Jackson and George counties

A $9 million project is now complete to overlay approximately 25 miles of State Route 57 in Jackson and George counties. In Jackson County, the project included SR 57 from Ratliff Ln. to the George County line, and in George County, the project included SR 57 from State Route 26 to the Greene County line.

The project was awarded to Huey P. Stockstill, LLC.

Cable barrier installation project underway on I-59 in Clarke, Jasper and Pearl River counties

Along I-59 in Clarke, Jasper and Pearl River counties, a project is underway to install cable barrier and pier protection near overpasses from County Rd. 334 to County Rd. 35 in Clarke and Jasper counties and from Hillsdale Gumpond Rd. to west Union in Pearl River County. Currently, crews are performing earthwork to flatten slopes and have begun placing concrete vegetative pads. Work in Clarke and Jasper counties should be finished this fall, and crews will soon begin work in Pearl River County.

The $8.3 million project was awarded to Simmons Erosion Control, Inc. of Lake and is expected to wrap up in 2026.

Overlay project on State Route 605 now complete in Harrison County

Work is now complete on an overlay project on State Route 605 from I-10 to State Route 67 in Harrison County.

The $5.3 million project was awarded to Warren Paving.

Overlay project now complete on State Route 15 in Harrison and Stone counties

Work is now complete on a project to overlay State Route 15 from the Stone County line south 7.4 miles and from the Harrison County line north 8.8 miles. In addition to paving, the scope of work in the $5 million project also involves signal upgrades.

The project contract was awarded to Huey P. Stockstill, LLC.

Signal and information technology system (ITS) projects in Harrison and Hancock counties

Work is nearing completion and intersections are being finalized on a $5 million project to repair or replace traffic signals and information technology along U.S. 90 from Bay St. Louis to Biloxi following damage sustained from Hurricane Zeta. This project was awarded to Webster Electric of Collinsville and is expected to be completed in late fall 2025.

A similar project is nearing completion in Harrison County along U.S. 49, I-10, I-110, State Route 605 and State Route 67 at 51 signalized intersections. Communication at each signal is being finalized and crews have installed a traffic communication tower south of U.S. 49 near Jones Park. This $3.4 million project was awarded to Powell Construction Services of Vancleave and is expected to wrap up in late fall 2025.

Mill and overlay project underway on State Route 15 in Jones County

Night work is taking place in Laurel to mill and overlay State Route 15 from Queen St. to Audubon Dr. in Jones County.

The $4.5 million project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders and should be completed in 2026.

Mill and overlay project underway on U.S. 98 in Forrest and Lamar counties

Crews are repairing failed areas and performing curb and gutter work on a mill and overlay project on U.S. 98 in Forrest and Lamar counties. The scope of work includes mill and overlay from Weathersby Rd. to I-59 and raised pavement marker replacement and failed repair on Hardy St. from 40th Ave. to U.S. 49. Some of the work will take place at night to minimize traffic impacts.

This $4.3 million project was awarded to Warren Paving and is expected to conclude in spring 2026.

Overlay project now complete on State Route 29 in Perry County

A project to overlay State Route 29 from one mile south of U.S. 98 to Daughtry Hill Rd. in Perry County is now complete.

The $3.6 million project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders.

Overlay underway on State Route 43 in Pearl River County

Clearing is underway as part of a project to overlay State Route 43 from just south of Wheats Curve to State Route 26 in Pearl River County.

The $3.5 million project was awarded to Huey P. Stockstill, LLC and is expected to wrap up in spring 2026.

Widening and overlay project now complete on State Route 28 in Jones County

A $2.8 million project is now complete in Jones County to widen and overlay State Route 28 from the intersection of U.S. 84 and extending west for approximately 4.7 miles.

The contract was awarded to Walters Construction Co. Inc. of Laurel.

Safety improvement project now complete in Forrest County

Work is now complete on a project to make safety improvements to U.S. 49 from W.S.F. Tatum Blvd. to Sims Rd. in Forrest County. The project’s scope included the construction of six directionalized medians.

The $2.1 million project was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction.
