MDOT offers resources and advice for hurricane season

Hurricane season is here and the Mississippi Department of Transportation is advising residents how to be safe in the face of danger.

MDOT provides free resources to help Mississippi residents prepare for a hurricane evacuation when a storm system threatens.

The MDOT traffic mobile app, hurricane evacuation kit checklist, and the 2023 MDOT hurricane evacuation guide gives residents a checklist of precautions for safe travel.

With some major highway routes closed for bridge repairs in the area, MDOT advises residents what roads are available in the event of an evacuation. MDOT Public Information Officer Anna Ehrgott said, “Now one is US Highway 90. It’s actually closed right there just over the Louisiana State Line. And so please use I-10 instead for that hurricane evacuation route. Another is Highway 43 and Pearlington. It is also currently closed for bridge replacement project in an area north of Picayune. So, I would suggest instead of taking Highway 43 in that area, you can take Highway 11.”

MDOT also encourages all residents to download the traffic mobile app which provides real-time traffic conditions throughout the state and sends emergency alerts directly to users.
