Highway 49 re-opening after railroad repairs

Mississippi Department of Transportation opened the southbound lanes of Highway 49 just after 11:30 a.m. today and expected the northbound lanes to open just after noon.

MDOT Engineer Kelly Castleberry said Kansas City Southern Railroad was leveling the tracks that were replaced from each approach to the crossing this morning.

Once that work was done, the roadway was cleaned  and cleared, allowing the highway to be re-opened.

The work to replace the aging railroad tracks began October 23, causing traffic headaches for the 40,000 or so vehicles that used the corridor on a daily basis.
