MDOT gives updates on HWY 49 and 53 expansion

HARRISON COUNTY, Miss (WXXV) – Many residents have been eagerly anticipating the completion of the Highway 49 and 53 expansion project, which will widen the road from four lanes to six lanes between School Road and O’Neal Road. I spoke with the Mississippi Department of Transportation for an update on the project.

The goal of the expansion is to increase traffic capacity and improve traffic flow. A new intersection where Highway 53 and Highway 49 cross will prioritize displaced left turns. This aims to optimize left-turn traffic and help remove congestion from the main intersection.

The project has been in development since the 2023 legislative session and was approved and funded by the Mississippi State Legislature due to its significance. It is expected to be completed in 2026.
