MDOT Commissioner at Harrison County Republican Club
The Mississippi Department of Transportation is in desperate need of funds to repair and maintain roadways across the state, according to MDOT Commissioner Tom King as he spoke to the Harrison County Republican Women’s Club today.
Tom King made a special appearance at the Great Southern Club in Gulfport explaining funding needs, current highway conditions, what it might take to receive more funding and what might happen if they don’t.
King encouraged the club to reach out to legislators to come up with a plan. He explained if some sort of funding doesn’t come, they may resort to shutting down roads that aren’t safe anymore.
He also touched on the work that needs to be done here on the Coast. “I think we need to pave Highway 90 all the way from Ocean Springs to Bay St. Louis. That needs to be done. We need to do some work on 57. We need to do some work on 67. There’s work all over the place and there’s additional roads that we can build and use and again economic development is what it’s all about. It would put a lot of folks to work if we get a transportation bill that we could put and use it wisely and in a wise manner on the Coast,” said King.
Commissioner Tom King has expressed support for a potential gas tax increase to recover some of the needed funding.
