MDMR Emergency Oyster Work Program

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources has initiated an emergency program to relocate live oysters in areas that will benefit our fishermen on the Coast.
The DMR is paying eligible fishermen using disaster funds they received in 2014.Those qualified include Mississippi commercial fishermen who had a license in 2011 and commercially harvested oysters in one or multiple years prior to 2011.
DMR officials tell News 25 Sunday’s opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway put them in a race against time. Melissa Scallan with DMR said, “We don’t know how long we’ve got until that fresh water reaches us, they opened the spillway on Sunday, and so we could have a limited amount of time before that water reaches us. So, we want to be proactive and not wait to see what’s going to happen and we want to help. We want to help preserve our resources and help our fishermen.”
Informational meetings will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Bolton Building in Biloxi. Fishermen looking to apply for funds are urged to bring their valid Mississippi license, a tax ID number or social security number, and bank account information.
