MDEQ reminds beachgoers to be mindful of water advisories

Today is the official start of summer, the perfect time to go to the beach.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality wants to remind visitors when beach advisories are expected to be issued.

MDEQ says especially after a period of heavy rain that bacteria levels exceed water quality and pose a risk to health.

When an advisory is issued, water should be avoided.

Beachgoers can still enjoy the sand, but otherwise, MDEQ says it is “swim at your own risk.”

Beaches under advisory are tested every 24 hours.

Beach advisories can be received by texting MDEQBEACH to 833-259-4545, following the organization on Twitter, or by checking the beach monitoring program website.
