MDEQ Revises Closure for Section of Beach in Long Beach
(JACKSON, Miss.) — The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) revised a preemptive beach closure that was issued Wednesday for a segment of beach in the City of Long Beach.
Additional information from the city to MDEQ staff helped pinpoint the wastewater release near Trautman Avenue which results in the preemptive beach closure corresponding to Station 7A (Long Beach).
- The closure for Station 7A extends from Oak Gardens Avenue east to Girard Avenue.
MDEQ warns people to avoid water contact in this area including recreational activities such as swimming and wading.
The closure is being issued due to a broken wastewater main that was damaged today that resulted in the release of untreated wastewater.
The city is taking measures to repair the issues, and MDEQ is monitoring the situation in this area and may revise the closure as needed. The agency will lift the closure when bacteria levels indicate conditions are suitable for water contact.
