One officer wounded, one killed in standoff in Brandon
A second officer was killed in a standoff at a residence in Brandon before the situation was resolved, according to police.
The standoff began about 1:45 a.m. as a domestic dispute that turned into a hostage situation at a home in the Crossgates neighborhood, according to Brandon Police Chief Wayne Dearman. When officers arrived, a subject in the house fired on officers, wounding one.
The Brandon Police Officer, who suffered “significant injuries” was stable and talking.
After hours of a standoff, SWAT was able to rescue the hostage from the house on Terrapin Hill Road. The standoff continued until after 9:30 a.m., when shots were again fired.
A Madison police officer, Randy Tyler, and the subject, identified as 22-year-old Gabriel Matthew Wilson, were both fatally wounded in the exchange, according to MBI.
Tyler was a 7-year veteran of the Madison police force. He was a member of the department’s Special Response Team and was the field training coordinator for Madison. He also was a supervisor in the Narcotics Division.
Tyler retired as chief of the Ridgeland Police Department before joining Madison.
This is the 16th officer-involved shooting in Mississippi this year.
