Mayor Hewes Addresses Gulfport City Officials
The city of Gulfport is growing and most importantly, it’s in the right hands.
That was the message Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes had for a packed house at the Island View Casino this morning. Mayor Hewes spoke to hundreds at his state of the city address. He hit on several important highlights over the past year, the biggest being former President Bush’s visit to Gulfport on the 10 year anniversary of Katrina and the commissioning of the USS Jackson last week.
Hewes said he and the city are looking toward the future and there’s one project that is at the forefront. “Without a doubt, it’s the aquarium. That’s going to take years to get it out of the ground but we’re already a year ahead of where I thought we’d be. And with the announcement of the 17 million from the Restore Act Fund, that moves us that much further ahead. We have the design team in town next week and I think by the early to middle part of next year, we’ll actually know what it’s going to look like and start being able to do the engineering. The Legislature has been great helping us out, the governor. There’s a lot of enthusiasm state wide for the aquarium.”
Mayor Hewes went on to say the aquarium has taken more work than they realized but he’s excited for its future success.
