Mayor Gilich wants a seawall in Biloxi

We see crews cleaning up sand on Highway 90, but it always seems to make its way back. Now, Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich says it has to stop and he has an idea.
Mayor Gilich would like to see a seawall return to the edge of the beach, as it stood from the 1920s until Hurricane Camille. The seawall rose 12 steps above the sand.
The mayor is seeking advice from scientists at the University of Southern Mississippi and Texas A&M for advice on dealing with the profile of the beach and the impact tides, breaking waves, and the current have on the shoreline. “We’re facing, I think, about $3 million to replenish some of the sand that’s almost up to the highway now. We’ve got to make a start. Let’s invest in doing some studies on what we’ve got to do. We don’t have enough time to build the dunes and some of the sea oats that’s going to hold the sand. We could use some science to do some things more directly and in a more timely manner,” said Mayor Gilich.
Mayor Gilich plans to share this advice with Harrison County supervisors, who use local tax dollars to maintain the 26 mile long beach.
