Marine Research Center Construction
Over a decade in the making, construction is finally underway for a new marine research center in Ocean Springs.
The first slab was laid out for the replacement of the original center that was lost in Hurricane Katrina. When finished, the $16 million project will include 10 structures and one connecting bridge on a total of about 10 acres of land. The buildings will house a mix of formal education programs for students and will also be open to the public for tours. Marine Education Center director Chris Snyder said, “We’re overjoyed to finally get it underway and we have spent quite a lot of time and effort and labor. The slab pouring is really the foundation for the whole project and to get that behind us and to have it come out really well and on a beautiful day is just really a great feeling.”
Construction is expected to reach completion in January of 2017. They hope to be fully operating next spring.
