Mardi Gras preparations
There are 34 days until Mardi Gras on February 13th. People have already hit the stores and are gearing up for the carnival season.
The dozens of colorful floats and decorations that will roll down the streets during Mardi Gras do not just appear overnight and the months of work and preparation for the carnival season is not possible without people like Jakyala Miller who stocks the shelves at the Mardi Gras Supply Store for months in preparation for the big days. “We have a lot of people that come in for their floats and the main thing they get for their floats is the ice crack paper and the fringe. The hot items so far has been the new t-shirts and the ef82s and the ef85s.”
Miller says that things are flying off the shelves and now is the time to load up all your Mardi Gras needs. “if you wait to the last minute then everything is going to be sold out and we have also new package deals for krewe members. If people want to come and get those, it’s a good deal, like you can get ten cases for $199.”
According to long time Mardi Gras goers, having one, two, three or four beads is still not enough to celebrate the holiday right. Shopper Tara Adams said, “Lots of beads. Yes, beads and lots of throws and tons of fun.” “I get surprised every time somebody comes in here with a big purchase like you would be surprised. They go extreme. I say if you are going to do it you want to throw ones at the parade.”
The good times will also be rolling for our four-legged friend and for a good cause. “We are having a Pupsideon Parade which is to benefit all of the Hancock County Animal Shelters and the parade will consist of different dogs and we crowned a king and queen for this year’s parade. The theme of the parade is ‘Lassie in the Sky with Diamonds,” said Adams.
